Rep. Amobi Godwin Ogah Celebrates Prof. Kelechi Okonta on Birthday, Hails Him as Pride of His Constituency

The member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Amobi Godwin Ogah, has extended warm birthday felicitations to renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and academic, Kelechi Okonta, describing him as a distinguished son of the constituency whose remarkable achievements continue to bring pride to Abia State.

In a goodwill message to mark the occasion, the federal lawmaker praised Professor Okonta for his outstanding contributions to medicine, particularly in the highly specialized field of cardiothoracic surgery.

Ogah noted that the medical expert, who hails from Uturu in Isuikwuato Local Government Area, has carved a niche for himself as one of the most respected surgeons in Nigeria and beyond.

Professor Okonta currently serves as a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Port Harcourt, where he has played a vital role in advancing surgical education and training the next generation of medical professionals.

Widely regarded as one of the top three cardiothoracic surgeons in Nigeria, Professor Okonta is also recognized as the first cardiothoracic surgeon from Abia State, a milestone that has earned him admiration across the medical community.

Over the years, he has held several prestigious leadership positions within the university and the health sector.

He previously served as Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and the University of Port Harcourt, where he contributed immensely to strengthening surgical practice, research, and medical training.

Professor Okonta also served as Director of the Youth Friendly Centre at the University of Port Harcourt, where he championed initiatives focused on improving youth health awareness and access to medical support services.

Earlier in his professional career, he held the position of Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre Owerri, further demonstrating his leadership in healthcare delivery.

Beyond clinical practice and teaching, Professor Okonta has also played a critical role in academic administration and professional medical institutions.

In addition, the celebrated surgeon serves as an examiner at the West African College of Surgeons, where he participates in the training and certification of surgeons across the West African sub-region.

While celebrating the renowned medical expert, Rep. Ogah described Professor Okonta as one of the shining lights of the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, noting that his achievements have placed the constituency on the global map of medical excellence.

According to the lawmaker, Professor Okonta's dedication, discipline, and commitment to saving lives continue to inspire young people within the constituency and beyond.
