Grief, anger, and calls for justice have erupted in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State following the mysterious death of a young man, Mr. Akobundu Okorie Wisdom, who reportedly died while in police custody.

In a statement issued by his elder brother, Mr. Okorie Festus, the family accused officers of the Bende Divisional Police Station of being complicit in the sudden death of the young man, describing the incident as "a cruel and conspired killing.ÔÇØ

According to the statement, Akobundu Okorie was invited to the police station by one Officer Evans Onyeka and walked into the station alive and healthy. However, only a few hours later, the family was informed that he was dead.

"Let it be known that the story being circulated by the police is false. My brother was not involved in any case, neither was he sick or hospitalized before his death,ÔÇØ Festus stated.

He revealed that the police hurriedly took the body to the hospital without informing any member of the family. Evidence gathered by the family, according to him, suggests that Akobundu may have died right inside the police station before officers attempted to cover up the incident.

Festus specifically mentioned Officer Evans and another officer identified as Austin, both of whom were allegedly on duty that day. He expressed shock that despite knowing him and his late brother personally, they never contacted the family.

"That silence is suspicious. We demand answers. The DPO, DCO, Inspector Evans, Austin, and every officer on duty that day must tell the world what killed my brother,ÔÇØ he declared.

The family Akobundu Okorie has therefore called for an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Akobundu's death, warning that any attempt to distort the truth or shield those responsible will not be tolerated.

The statement, signed by Mr. Okorie Festus on behalf of the family, was dated October 25, 2025, and credited to Kalu Uchechi.

Meanwhile, concerned residents in Bende have expressed shock over the incident, urging the Abia State Commissioner of Police to order a full-scale investigation and ensure that justice is served.
