Amid escalating tensions in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu has directed political stakeholders to respect judicial rulings to restore peace and stability in the region. The President made this declaration while addressing leaders of the Niger Delta under the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) at a meeting in Abuja.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law, warning that any attempt to undermine constitutional order would not be tolerated. The President acknowledged the deepening political crisis in Rivers State and emphasized that adherence to legal judgments was the only viable solution.

The crisis in Rivers State has been fueled by a protracted power struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his political godfather Minister Nyesom Wike. The situation escalated following legal battles over the legitimacy of certain government actions and political appointments. Court rulings have been issued, yet implementation has been sluggish, heightening tensions across the state.

President Tinubu disclosed that he had intervened early to mediate in the dispute, leading to a signed agreement by both parties. However, the continued unrest necessitated his latest call for swift and decisive action to enforce legal resolutions.

The President did not mince words in his remarks, stressing that Nigeria's democratic system rests on the foundation of the judiciary. He urged the political actors in Rivers to put aside personal interests and uphold legal interpretations of the Constitution.

"This is a nation governed by the rule of law. I would not be here as President without it. I have total confidence in our judiciary. While human beings can make errors, once the court has spoken, that is it," Tinubu asserted.

He charged the Niger Delta leaders to take proactive steps in resolving the crisis, calling on them to engage Governor Fubara privately and openly to implement the court's directives.

The meeting saw participation from top Niger Delta leaders, including King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff and former Akwa Ibom Governor Obong Victor Attah, both of whom acknowledged the President's role in seeking lasting peace. Attah, chair of the PANDEF reconciliation committee in Rivers, warned that the state's political instability had far-reaching implications for national peace.

Beyond the Rivers crisis, President Tinubu reiterated his administration's commitment to the development of the Niger Delta, highlighting ongoing economic recovery efforts and the coastal road project. He assured that international collaborations would bring new investment into the region's ports and infrastructure.
