A rare public encounter between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his political rival, Labour Party's Peter Obi, has sparked public interest and political commentary after the two met at the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican in Rome.

Also present at the high-profile religious event was former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who played a pivotal role in easing the tension between the two Nigerian political figures.

According to Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the encounter was cordial and filled with light-hearted moments. He narrated the incident via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Fayemi approached the section where Tinubu sat with other world leaders and encouraged Obi to accompany him to greet the President.

"On getting to the President, Fayemi broke the ice between Obi and Tinubu. He said: 'Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.'
President Tinubu, ever quick-witted, responded, 'I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I'm the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.'
The President's response cracked up Obi, who agreed with the President,ÔÇØ Onanuga wrote.

This moment of unexpected harmony has sparked conversations, especially given the political rivalry between Tinubu and Obi, whose 2023 presidential campaign created a seismic shift in Nigeria's electoral politics.
Peter Obi, also posting on X, acknowledged the meeting with Tinubu, describing it as warm and respectful. He reminisced about his previous visits to the Vatican and emphasized the spiritual significance of the event.

He added that he had previously visited the Vatican as part of Nigeria's official delegation during the canonisation ceremonies of Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa. He also highlighted his involvement with Scholas Occurrentes, the global educational and cultural initiative founded by Pope Francis, which has allowed him to engage in global dialogue promoting peace and social justice.

Obi shared reflections from the Holy Father's homily at the inauguration, particularly the Pope's appeal for global leaders to walk in unity and serve the poor, the suffering, and the marginalized.
