THUGS AMBUSH INEC STAFF IN OGUN , SHOOT POLICEMAN DEAD

A Police Sergeant, Idoko Sunday, was Sunday night shot dead by some political thugs who attempted to snatch election results that were being conveyed to Ilaro, in Ogun State.
Late Sergeant Sunday, attached to the Police Special Protection Unit, SPU was escorting officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission , INEC from Ipokia to Ilaro, when they were ambushed.
The armed thugs opened fire on the vehicle conveying the team, in an apparent attempt to hijack the vehicle conveying election results.
Though Sergeant Sunday and another Police escort, as gathered, attempted to prevent the move by engaging them in a gun battle, Sunday was shot in the chest and ribcage.
Vanguard gathered that teams of Military and Police personnel who were alerted on the attack, repelled the hoodlums, forcing them to abandon their mission and escaped, when it became obvious that they had been overpowered.
Some INEC ad hoc staff in the vehicle sustained varying degrees of injury in the ensuing stampede.
When contacted, spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the command was still on the trail of the hoodlums.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Illyasu had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department, SCIID to take over the investigation with a view to arresting perpetrators the thugs.
