A routine downpour turned tragic in Aba on Monday as a massive billboard collapsed near the GIA Event Centre, along the Aba-Owerri Road, crushing several tricycles and injuring multiple people, including a young man in a green shirt who narrowly missed escaping.

The heartbreaking incident occurred close to Salad Market, a usually bustling part of the city, after hours of rainfall that appeared to weaken the already unstable structure. According to videos and photos shared by eyewitnesses on social media, particularly on the page of Uwaoma Susan Joseph, the heavy billboard came crashing down on a line of parked Keke Napeps, leaving a trail of wreckage and sorrow.

Eyewitness accounts and visual evidence strongly suggest that the incident was avoidable. A closer look at the fallen billboard structure reveals poor engineering work at the base. The foundation appeared shallow and weak, with only three iron columns used to anchor a billboard of such massive size-raising serious questions about structural integrity and regulatory oversight.

One of the most disturbing parts of the footage showed a young man in a green shirt, who was moments away from safety when the billboard struck. His efforts to escape were tragically cut short, and he was pinned down as the structure collapsed with thunderous force.

While the number of casualties is yet to be officially confirmed, reports indicate that the accident resulted in fatalities. Sympathizers and community members have expressed grief and anger over the preventable loss of lives.

Calls are already growing for the Abia State Signage and Advertising Agency (ABSAA) and other relevant urban planning authorities to take immediate action. Residents insist on thorough inspections of all billboards and signage in the city to avoid future tragedies.

"This could have been anyone. Government must act now,ÔÇØ one concerned citizen said at the scene.

The mood in Aba remains somber as families and traders mourn the victims of yet another urban safety failure. Investigations are expected to commence immediately.
