"The Trade Union Congress (TUC) warns of looming social unrest due to the recent fuel price hike in Nigeria, calling on the government to rescind the increase and adopt policies that alleviate citizens' hardship."
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has raised concerns over the recent surge in petrol prices, warning that the increase could lead to social unrest across the country.
In a statement signed by TUC President Festus Osifo on Wednesday, the union expressed strong opposition to the new pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which jumped to N897 and N855 per liter from N617 just days ago. The TUC cautioned that this sudden hike would exacerbate poverty levels among Nigerian workers and deepen existing economic hardships.

"The sudden hike in fuel and electricity costs will only exacerbate these challenges, leading to further hardship and potential social unrest,ÔÇØ the union stated.

The warning comes amid growing discontent over the rising cost of living, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) also calling for the immediate reversal of the petrol price hike. Both unions are urging the government to take immediate steps to address the worsening economic situation and avert a potential crisis.
