The decision, according to a press statement signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, FCA, is to ensure that candidates sitting for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), can reach their various examination centres without encountering movement restrictions that usually accompany the sanitation exercise.

The Commissioner emphasized that although the formal sanitation will not hold this month, the government still urges residents across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state to personally ensure the cleanliness of their homes, streets, gutters, and drainages. He maintained that a clean environment is not just a civic duty but a vital aspect of public health management, especially in light of climate-sensitive diseases and waste-related infections.

"While we are temporarily suspending the exercise to allow our students free movement for their national examination, this does not mean the importance of a clean and healthy environment has been relegated. We must all take it as a personal responsibility," Ogbonna stated.
He further expressed the government's appreciation to the people of Abia for their cooperation and urged them to see sanitation not as a monthly obligation but a daily lifestyle choice.
This proactive decision by Governor Alex C. Otti's administration reflects the state's commitment to balancing educational development and public health policies in a way that serves the greater good
