Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has expressed deep concern over the current fuel pricing situation, revealing that petrol refined by the Dangote Refinery is reportedly being sold cheaper in Togo than in Nigeria.

Falana made the revelation during an interview on Politics Today, a flagship programme on Channels Television, where he also warned against the Federal Government's proposed 5% fuel surcharge, describing it as an additional burden on already struggling Nigerians.

According to Falana, while Nigerians are already paying Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel purchases, the proposed surcharge amounts to multiple taxation that would push citizens further into hardship.

"I guess the government wants to go back to the drawing table and ensure that it is not accused of multiple taxes or double taxation because consumers will pay VAT for buying fuel. They will now put an additional 5 per cent tax,ÔÇØ Falana stated.

He further revealed the disturbing price disparity, noting that the same Dangote fuel supplied from Nigeria is being sold at a cheaper rate in Togo, with a margin of about 65 per litre compared to what Nigerians pay.

"From what we just read today, Dangote fuel taken from Nigeria is now cheaper in Togo than in Nigeria. I think about 65 naira difference,ÔÇØ he lamented.

The legal luminary urged the Federal Government to urgently review its economic policies, stressing that Nigeria cannot afford to allow its citizens to bear the heaviest costs while neighbouring countries benefit from cheaper fuel.
