The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has declined to proceed with his earlier plan to open his defence in the ongoing terrorism trial filed against him by the Federal Government.

Kanu, who had initially written to the court requesting summons for witnesses to testify in his defence, made a dramatic turn during Monday's hearing before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, insisting that there is no valid case against him.

Speaking during the proceedings, the detained separatist leader maintained that after carefully reviewing the case file and the evidence presented by the prosecution, he found nothing substantial that warrants a defence.

"There is no legitimate charge against me. I have seen the evidence they tendered; none establishes any case. I am a victim of persecution, not prosecution,ÔÇØ Kanu reportedly told the court.

Justice Omotosho, however, advised Kanu to put his position in writing and submit it to the court as well as the prosecution for formal consideration. The judge also recommended that the IPOB leader consult criminal law experts to understand the full implications of his decision not to present a defence.

Following this development, the court adjourned the matter to November 4, 5, and 6, 2025, for the adoption of final written addresses by both the defence and prosecution.

This comes amid growing public interest in Kanu's prolonged detention and trial, which has attracted criticism from human rights groups and political observers who insist that the IPOB leader's rights have been repeatedly violated since his re-arrest in 2021.

With Kanu refusing to enter a defence, the case now heads into a decisive stage that could determine whether the court will dismiss the terrorism charges or proceed to conviction based on the prosecution's evidence.
