On Monday, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, adjourned Kanu's terrorism trial to October 16, 2025, following the failure of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to submit a long-awaited medical report on the IPOB leader's health condition.

At the previous hearing, the court had ordered the President of the NMA to set up a board of qualified medical experts to examine Kanu's health and present findings to the court. The directive came after Kanu's legal team complained about his alleged deteriorating health while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Justice Omotosho specifically asked the NMA panel to determine whether the DSS medical facility was adequate to handle Kanu's condition or if he should be transferred to a private ward at the National Hospital, Abuja for proper medical attention.
However, during the resumed proceedings, the court was informed that the NMA had not complied with the order, leaving the judge with no option but to adjourn the matter.
The delay has sparked renewed concern among observers and supporters of the IPOB leader, many of whom believe his continued detention without proper medical evaluation could worsen his health situation.

Legal experts have also noted that the adjournment underscores the growing tension between human rights concerns and national security interests, as the case continues to drag on nearly four years after Kanu's re-arrest and extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

All eyes are now on October 16, when the NMA is expected to finally submit its report - a document that could determine whether Kanu remains in DSS custody or is moved to a neutral medical facility for treatment.
