In a shocking diplomatic development, Qatar has officially barred Nigerian men from traveling alone, sparking outrage, confusion, and fears of strained bilateral relations between the two nations.

According to reports from travel industry insiders, the new directive - which quietly took effect around September 5, 2025 - was issued by Qatar's Ministry of Interior. The policy stops men traveling without family from obtaining tourist or transit visas, effectively banning independent male travel.

The rules apply immediately to both fresh and pending visa applications, leaving many stranded. Only women and family units are now eligible for approval. Even then, applicants must prove they have a confirmed return ticket and must book accommodation strictly in five-star hotels before their visas are processed.

For Nigerian male professionals, business executives, students, and regular travelers using Doha as a key transit hub to Asia and Europe, this amounts to a travel lockdown.

"This is practically a travel ban for Nigerian men who are not flying with their families. It will disrupt businesses, trade, and personal plans,ÔÇØ one travel operator lamented.

Qatar insists the policy is designed to curb visa overstays, but many Nigerians view it as a discriminatory move that unfairly targets men, while women and families are left with more freedom of movement.

Observers warn the decision could have wider consequences. Qatar Airways has long been a preferred airline for Nigerians traveling across continents, and the restrictions now threaten to drive passengers to rival carriers.

This is not the first time Qatar's visa policies have sparked controversy. In 2019, then Senate President Bukola Saraki appealed for relaxed entry rules, while in 2023, former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika urged fairer treatment of Nigerian travelers. Instead, the latest measures appear even harsher - singling out Nigerian men in particular.

Diplomatic watchers fear the decision could strain Nigeria-Qatar relations further if urgent talks are not held to resolve the matter. For now, many male travelers have been forced to either cancel trips outright or travel under costly, restrictive conditions.
