Why Tinubu's Emergency Rule In Rivers May Trigger A Political Showdown

"With all these and many more, no responsible President will stand by and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution to restore peace, order, and security.ÔÇØ

The President invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, declaring that the state of emergency was necessary to restore governance and stability in Rivers. However, analysts point out that the political rift between Governor Fubara and pro-Tinubu forces has played a significant role in escalating tensions in the state.

The President's suspension of all elected officials in the state has raised constitutional and democratic concerns. While Tinubu argues that the governor should have requested federal intervention under Section 305(5) of the Constitution, legal experts have questioned whether the President has the unilateral power to remove elected officials without legislative approval.
