President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and the entire State Assembly have sent shockwaves through Nigeria's political landscape. In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, Tinubu announced that the deteriorating security situation in Rivers State necessitated his intervention. He claimed that within the last 48 hours, militants had vandalized oil pipelines, and the state government failed to act.

"The latest security reports made available to me show that between yesterday and today, there have been disturbing incidents of pipeline vandalization by some militants without the governor taking any action to curtail them,ÔÇØ Tinubu stated.

"With all these and many more, no responsible President will stand by and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution to restore peace, order, and security.ÔÇØ

The President invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, declaring that the state of emergency was necessary to restore governance and stability in Rivers. However, analysts point out that the political rift between Governor Fubara and pro-Tinubu forces has played a significant role in escalating tensions in the state.

The President's suspension of all elected officials in the state has raised constitutional and democratic concerns.
