ABIA: Engage ASUU Productively To Halt Ongoing Strike - NANS Charges FG

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Abia State Axis, has called for an end to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Association led by Comrade Frank Orji, made the call while addressing Journalists in a press conference in Umuahia, on Friday, 4th March.

Orji, who is the NANS Zonal Representative of Abia State said that the press conference is a peaceful approach taken by the Chapter to voice their displeasure on the ongoing strike.

Orji who spoke in a very passionate and angry manner said that it was disheartening that students are the ones who will suffer the effects of the strike more, as it will hamper and delay them from graduating when they are expected to. He recounted how students were made to sit at home for almost a year because of Covid 19.

He lamented that the Federal Government has over the years shown how much indifferent they are in improving the education system in the country, because, most of their children school abroad. He said it was an insult to the sensibility of Nigerian students that the Minister of Education refused to address them, but rather walked out on them during their protest.

He advised students to stay calm and remain law-abiding as doing otherwise would be detrimental to their future, believing that the struggle for students' emancipation will be realized soon.

However, he urged the government across all levels to wade in and engage with ASUU productively in other to halt the ongoing strike, as anything short of that would make students to take to the streets in protest of which #End SARS will be a child's play compared to it.
Similarly, he reached out to the Abia state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, who he described as a student-friendly to add his voice and also engage the youths in his government in other to reduce youth restiveness in the state.
Among those that were represented are; Comrade Chukwuma ( SUG President, Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike), Comrade Christian ( SUG President, Abia State College of Education), Comrade Ebeneme Chidera (SUG President elect of Abia State University Uturu), and other Student Union Leaders.
