Abia Govt Moves to End Poor Construction as ASPIB Holds Major QA/QC Capacity Workshop in Umuahia | WATCH VIDEO

The Abia State Government has intensified efforts to improve infrastructure standards across the state as the Abia State Project Implementation Bureau (ASPIB) organized a two-day Capacity Building Workshop on Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) for engineers, architects, and technical professionals.

The workshop, which began at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Umuahia, brought together professionals from various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) involved in infrastructure development across the state.

Speaking after the first day of the workshop, the Director General of the Abia State Project Implementation Bureau, Mr. Onyinye Nwosu, explained that the initiative was designed to strengthen the quality assurance and quality control framework guiding government projects in Abia State.

According to him, the workshop forms part of a broader strategy by the administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti to ensure that public infrastructure projects meet the highest standards.

Nwosu noted that since the current administration began its infrastructure renewal agenda, Abia State has effectively become a massive project site, with road construction, urban renewal, and other development initiatives ongoing across several parts of the state.

He explained that the establishment of the Project Implementation Bureau was part of the governor's strategy to provide an additional layer of technical supervision and support to government projects.

According to him, the Bureau plays a key role in ensuring that all construction works executed by government agencies adhere strictly to approved standards and engineering procedures.

"We all know that His Excellency set up the Project Implementation Bureau to be the responsible arm for quality assurance and quality control in the state,ÔÇØ he said.

He added that the Bureau works closely with MDAs to monitor project implementation, provide professional support, and ensure that contractors deliver infrastructure that meets required specifications.

The ASPIB Director General emphasized that capacity building is one of the bureau's core mandates, noting that improving the skills and coordination of professionals involved in project delivery is essential to achieving sustainable infrastructure development.

He disclosed that the Bureau is made up of highly qualified engineers, architects, and technical specialists who collaborate with government institutions to strengthen project planning and supervision.

According to him, the workshop created an opportunity for professionals within the state to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and review best practices in project management and infrastructure delivery.

"Sometimes you just need professionals to come together, discuss processes, and share best practices. The value that comes out of such engagement can be tremendous,ÔÇØ he said.

Nwosu further stated that the workshop also introduced participants to Inspection Test Plans, Quality Management Plans, and monitoring processes designed to improve the standard of government projects.

He noted that the state government has already begun to see the positive impact of stronger quality assurance mechanisms.

According to him, many of the newly constructed roads and infrastructure projects across the state are already demonstrating improved quality and durability compared to previous standards.

"You can see the quality of roads being built in Abia State. The infrastructure quality is improving. It will take some time to see the full impact, but we are already seeing traction,ÔÇØ he said.

The Director General also acknowledged that poor construction quality had historically been a concern in many parts of Nigeria, including Abia State.

However, he expressed confidence that the ongoing reforms introduced by the state government will gradually transform the infrastructure sector.

He stressed that the Bureau's oversight functions are designed to eliminate substandard project execution and ensure that taxpayers receive value for public investments.

The two-day workshop is expected to conclude with additional technical sessions aimed at strengthening the quality management framework for infrastructure development across Abia State.

Observers say the initiative represents another step in the government's efforts to institutionalize quality control mechanisms as Abia continues its ambitious infrastructure development drive.
