Abia State Postpones Keke And Okada Restriction, Announces New Registration Plan

In response to public appeals, the Abia State government has announced a postponement of the planned restriction on the operations of tricycles (keke) and motorcycles (okada) in Aba and Umuahia. Initially scheduled to start today, July 1, 2024, the restriction will now commence on August 1, 2024.

This decision was conveyed in an urgent public announcement by Prince Okey Kanu, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Culture. The delay is intended to provide residents with additional time to prepare for the effective implementation and enforcement of the new policy.

Prince Kanu emphasized that while the restriction has been postponed, the enumeration and registration of all commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles in the state's transport sector will proceed as planned, starting today.

"This adjustment is to accommodate the numerous pleas by Abians to be given more time to prepare for the effective implementation and enforcement of the policy," stated Kanu.

The initial plan aimed to curb the operations of tricycles and motorcycles between the hours of 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM, a measure introduced to enhance security and traffic management in the state's major cities. The registration process is a crucial step towards achieving this goal, ensuring that all commercial vehicles are properly documented and regulated.
