ABSU Law Faculty to Relocate to Uturu by June 2025 - Abia Govt Confirms Readiness

The Abia State Government has confirmed that the relocation of the ABSU Law Faculty from Umuahia to Uturu will take place by June 2025. The Abia State Government has announced that the long-awaited relocation of the Faculty of Law, Abia State University (ABSU), from Umuahia to Uturu will commence at the end of the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic session.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made ABSU Law Faculty relocation known during a press briefing at the Government House, Umuahia. He emphasized that the delay in moving the Absu Law faculty back to its original location in Uturu was due to several logistical and accreditation challenges that needed to be addressed.

According to Kanu, "The new academic session and first semester began on March 3, 2025, and is expected to conclude by the end of June. Before now, the relocation of ABSU Law Faculty was hindered by student examinations, procedural concerns, and necessary infrastructural upgrades. Additionally, the Umuahia campus had outstanding accreditation matters that required resolution before the transition to Uturu could take place."

The Commissioner reaffirmed that Governor Alex Otti's administration is a listening government, ensuring that all stakeholders are considered before taking action of relocation of ABSU Law faculty. "We had to allow the Umuahia campus to sort out these issues while simultaneously working on necessary upgrades in Uturu to facilitate a seamless relocation," Kanu added.

48% Increase in ABSU Admissions Reflects New Governance Culture

Providing insights into the university's admission statistics, Kanu disclosed that ABSU admitted 6,246 fresh students into its first-year program for the 2024/2025 academic session. This represents a significant 48% increase compared to the previous year's figure of 4,196 students.
"Despite this increase, quotas for key professional courses such as law, medicine, pharmacy, and nursing sciences were not exceeded. This adherence to regulatory requirements underscores the new culture of administrative discipline and governance in Abia State institutions," Kanu emphasized.

State Government Reinforces Free Education Policy
Reiterating Governor Otti's commitment to accessible education, Kanu stated that the compulsory education policy remains in full effect across the state.
"Primary and junior secondary school students are not required to pay any form of fees, including PTA levies, sports fees, or any other unofficial charges. The heads of schools and principals are being provided with monthly imprests to efficiently manage their schools," he noted.

Teachers' Recruitment CBT Rescheduled for March 6 & 7

Addressing concerns about the ongoing teacher recruitment exercise, Kanu announced a slight adjustment in the schedule for the Computer-Based Test (CBT).

"The test, initially scheduled for March 5 and 6, will now hold on March 6 and 7. The change is to enable the government to resolve logistical challenges, particularly in locating and equipping CBT centers across the state," he explained.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, corroborated this, stating that each of the three senatorial zones in the state will have at least two CBT centers. He added that the extra day would allow officials to finalize preparations and ensure candidates have a smooth examination process.
Massive Road Construction Projects Underway Across Abia State

On infrastructure development, Kanu revealed that the Abia State Government is making significant strides in road construction and rehabilitation.

"There are currently 28 major road projects ongoing under contract, while over 40 other roads are undergoing direct labor reconstruction and maintenance. These projects cut across various communities and urban centers to enhance connectivity and economic development," he stated.

The Commissioner reassured the public that Governor Otti remains committed to infrastructural transformation and good governance, ensuring that every sector receives the necessary attention for sustainable development in Abia State.
