Appeal Court Justifies ABSU's Withdrawal Of Senator Orji Kalu's Bachelor's Degree Certificate

An appeal court sitting in Owerri, Imo state, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, upheld the withdrawal of the Bachelor's degree certificate awarded to the Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu.

In March, 2013, the Senate of the Abia State University (ABSU), announced the cancellation and withdrawal of the degree certificate in Government and Public Administration the institution had awarded to Kalu.

According to the senate, the certificate was withdrawn on the grounds of;

violation of the Academic Regulations of the University on Admission by Transfer.
non completion of the mandatory 6 semesters (3 academic years of study).

Orji Kalu was said to have run just 2 semesters out of the 6 mandatory semesters. He had dropped out of the University of Maidugri and re-enrolled on Transfer at ABSU when he was governor of Abia State.

In 2018, Kalu approached an Abia state High Court sitting in Isuikwuato on the grounds that ABSU denied him a fair hearing. The High court had restored the degree to him.

Justice Adefope Okojie of the appeal court on Tuesday, nullified the earlier judgement given by the Isuikwuato court on the ground that it lacked jurisdiction.
