COVID-19: Lagos Govt offers free medical care to all residents

Lagos State Government has promised to cover the medical bills of all maternity and emergency patients at all 27 General Hospitals in the state.

It said that the decision was to cushion the effects of the lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who spoke on Saturday at Lagos House, Marina, on the COVID-19 lockdown, hinted that the 'stay at home' order might be extended.

He revealed that patients to benefit from the free service fell in the following category of Emergency/Casualty cases: registration, laboratory tests, surgeries, and drugs.

The patients that fall in the category of Maternity Cases include normal delivery and Caesarean Sections (CS).

"What this means is that, at this time, patients with the above-listed conditions will not need to make any payments to access treatment and care at all our health centres across the state," the governor said.

He commended law-abiding residents and urged them to keep being responsible by obeying directives issued by the health experts.

Sanwo-Olu warned those who insisted on flouting the safety directives and guidelines.

"The strong arms of the law will catch up with you sooner than later, and you will be brought to justice swiftly and comprehensively," he said.

The governor added that the administration would prosecute anyone flouting the directives of the lockdown.

He said over 400 commercial buses have been impounded for flouting the order.
