....The 1st Abia Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta set to engage over 38 tertiary institutions across the state, promoting unity, sportsmanship, and youth empowerment.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has once again reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and sports development as he performed the symbolic lighting of the Torch of Unity and Peace for the 1st Abia Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta.

The brief but inspiring ceremony took place at the Governor's Nvosi country home in Isiala Ngwa South LGA, where he emphasized the importance of sports as a tool for unity, discipline, and youth engagement across the state.

Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the Governor disclosed that the games, which will hold from November 25th to 29th, 2025, will feature 23 sporting events involving 38 participating tertiary institutions, both state-owned and privately run.

"Today we light not just a torch of fire but of hope, passion, and youthful energy. As this torch travels across all tertiary institutions, it carries with it a message of unity, discipline, and excellence - the true spirit of Abia,ÔÇØ Governor Otti declared.

He further noted that the sports fiesta represents more than just competition - it's a platform for talent discovery, moral redirection, and positive youth engagement. According to him, through sports, young people can find strength, teamwork, and purpose - values essential for building a progressive and united Abia.

Governor Otti also announced a 500,000 participation grant for any institution presenting athletes in at least five sporting events, describing the gesture as a motivation for inclusivity and excellence.

Commending the Senior Special Assistant on Tertiary Institutions, Dr. Emeka Enyeazu, who chairs the Central Organising Committee in collaboration with the Abia State Sports Council, the Governor praised the team's diligence and dedication in bringing the vision to life.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, explained that the event, themed around unity and engagement, was initiated to foster friendship, competition, and collaboration among tertiary students across Abia. She described the fiesta as a reflection of the inclusive education policies of the Otti administration.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwobilor Ananaba, stated that the initiative demonstrates the government's commitment to grassroots sports development, noting that sports promotion in Abia is now being driven from primary to tertiary levels for early talent identification and development.

The Torch of Unity is expected to tour all 38 tertiary institutions across Abia before returning to the Umuahia Township Stadium, where the fiesta will officially commence.

The ceremony was witnessed by top government officials including the Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, members of the State Executive Council, Dr. Emeka Enyeazu, and Comrade Obioma George, among others.

With this initiative, Governor Alex Otti continues to inspire a generation of young Abians - lighting the torch not only of sports excellence but of unity, progress, and hope for a brighter Abia.
