ABA, Nigeria - In a chilling revelation that has shaken Nigerians, a two-year-old girl trafficked from Abuja to Aba for just 100,000 has been rescued in a dramatic operation led by the Abia Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

The little girl, renamed Chiamaka Favor (alias), was allegedly sold by a human trafficking syndicate operating between Abuja and Aba. According to a statement released on Friday, May 9, 2025, the rescue mission was made possible following the arrest of a prime suspect by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abia State.

"The two-year-old girl, who was trafficked in February 2025 from Abuja to Aba, was rescued on May 8 by the Abia Command of NAPTIP,ÔÇØ the agency confirmed.

The suspected trafficker, whose name has been withheld pending investigation, is believed to be a link in a broader network of three trafficking syndicates operating out of the Federal Capital Territory. Authorities say the suspect sold the child to a buyer in Aba for 100,000, a sum that has left many stunned at the callousness of child trafficking operations in the country.

NAPTIP officials revealed that they are currently interrogating the suspect while simultaneously expanding their probe to unmask other members of the syndicate and identify the buyer.

Meanwhile, the rescued child is in protective custody, safe and under care. In a move to reunite her with her family, NAPTIP has launched a public appeal:

"We urge the biological parents or relatives of this child to urgently contact our office. Every second counts in cases like this, and we're committed to restoring her to her rightful family,ÔÇØ the agency stated.

This tragic incident throws a harsh spotlight on Nigeria's growing human trafficking crisis, especially the exploitation of vulnerable children. Activists and child welfare experts are once again calling for tougher enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and collaborative surveillance between federal and state agencies to dismantle child trafficking rings.
