Activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, who recently led the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja, has publicly alleged that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secretly resolved the fate of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu well ahead of his trial. According to Sowore, the decision - whether a death sentence or life imprisonment - was pre-arranged within high-level political circles and is now being masked as legitimate legal procedure.

"For the avoidance of doubt... a secret decision has long been reached within the Tinubu regime regarding the fate of Nnamdi Kanu. The plan ... is to either sentence him to death or condemn him to life imprisonment."

Sowore claimed that when the judge, James Omotosho, rules that Kanu's refusal to open his defence amounts to an admission of guilt, the verdict will be a foregone conclusion rather than a fair trial. He drew a chilling parallel between the anticipated November judgment and the November 1995 execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists.

Sowore's remarks come amid national discourse on justice, accountability and the rule of law. He described Kanu's trial as less about justice and more a "test of conscience for the Nigerian state and its citizens alike." His warning resonates with his broader activism: during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja, he linked Kanu's detention to systemic inequality and suppression of dissent.

The implications of these allegations are far-reaching. Should the claims hold weight, they suggest a collapse of judicial independence and a return to punitive state tactics. For the Tinubu administration, the accusations raise questions of credibility, international perception, and internal stability.
