I WILL RETIRE THE GODFATHERS IN ABIA IF ELECTED - UWAKOLAM

The gubernatorial candidate of the accord party in Abia state, Chief Barrister Emeka Uwakolam has promised to put to end the era of godfathers in Abia state, saying that the demise of godfatherism will bring about light in the state and increased development.

Chief Emeka who revealed his plans for the state while interacting with Abia Facts' Emenike Iroegbu on the political program 'Focal Point', said that in the light of the recent underdevelopment and stagnation that have limited the potentials of the state, a lot needs to be considered, and of paramount importance is the issue of godfathers who have held the state captive.

In his words, "we no longer need godfathers who will bring out their monies to sponsor a candidate, only to turn out to be the dictators of the pace of development in the state. What we need are statesmen who will serve as advisors and stakeholders in the state. Their major influence will come through their strategic investments in critical areas of Abia's economy, helping in the industrialization drive.ÔÇØ

The former Deputy National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party and Special Assistant to the former speaker of the Federal House of Representatives Aminu Bello Masari maintained that given the mandate, he will be empowered to steer Abia to maximise its potential as a producing state, where industry and commerce will be the backbone of its economy.

On the issue of the challenges bedevilling the state, Chief Uwakolam said "if we fix the issue of power in our productive hubs, productivity will increase, money will be generated, and people will begin to make money of their investments.

We also need to ensure the proper mechanisms that will ensure the circulation of money in the state. At the moment, money is concentrated in the hands of very few individuals, making it difficult for the poor to feel the impact of anything being done. For instance, when wages are owed, there is no way money can get to the people who are the masses. This is the main cause of poverty in the land.

On the issue of equity, he challenged the governor to forget the issue of equity, stating that if it was about equity, he wasn't qualified to be governor, due to the fact that there were many more qualified persons before he was handpicked by the former governor. "All these can be seen as he has led this state to near-insolvency due to the bad leadership that is being perpetrated. There is nothing equitable than good governance, distribution of wealth, building lasting infrastructure,ÔÇØ he said.

On what his cardinal focus is, he replied by saying "I will demystify the office of the governor. Governors are now seen as demi-gods who are not to be questioned or challenged no matter what they say or do.ÔÇØ We need to bring the government to the people by making the governor assessable so as to know the plight of the people
