ABUJA, Nigeria - April 9, 2025 - In a decisive move to consolidate the leadership structure of the Labour Party (LP), a high-powered delegation led by the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, today met with top officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at its national headquarters in Abuja.

The delegation's visit marks a significant milestone following the recent Supreme Court judgment which invalidated the leadership of Julius Abure and affirmed the lawful structure of the party. Governor Otti, during the meeting, officially submitted a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the apex court's ruling to the Commission, laying to rest months of internal wrangling and conflicting claims over the party's control.

The governor emphasized that the meeting was not just a formality, but a vital step towards ensuring clarity, institutional alignment, and the restoration of unity within the party ranks. "This visit is aimed at fostering clarity and mutual understanding between the Labour Party and INEC. We are here as a family committed to strengthening democratic institutions and processes," he said.

The Labour Party delegation was warmly received by INEC's Acting Chairman, Mr. Sam Olumekun, alongside other National Commissioners. In response, Mr. Olumekun reiterated INEC's firm stance on impartiality and adherence to the rule of law. He assured the delegation of the Commission's readiness to work with political parties in accordance with constitutional provisions and judicial directives.

The visit comes at a time when political observers have expressed concerns over factional leadership battles within the Labour Party, which many feared could threaten the party's future ahead of the 2027 general elections. Today's engagement and submission of the court judgment are seen as a move to re-establish internal order and present a united front going forward.

The Supreme Court's decision, which nullified the tenure and decisions made under the now-defunct Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC), has now paved the way for a new beginning in the party's organizational structure.

Governor Otti, one of the most prominent figures in the party, expressed optimism about the road ahead. "The Labour Party is ready to reclaim its ideological foundation. This is about building strong institutions, not individuals. We have come to respect the rule of law and restore hope to our teeming supporters."
