Outspoken political activist and public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has raised alarm over what he describes as an impending storm ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections, warning that the period will be "delicate, dicey, dark, dangerous and chaotic."

In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Shehu painted a grim picture of the political climate, predicting high-stakes battles, unlikely alliances, and a volatile power struggle that could push the nation into uncharted territory.

Shehu warned that when sworn enemies and documented political rivals bury their differences not for reconciliation, but purely for the purpose of seizing power in an already polarised Nigeria, chaos is inevitable.

"When characters who had the opportunities in the past to make maximum use of power for the benefit of the citizenry, but failed to do that, descend into the political arena for selfish reasons, then expect more DARKNESS in politics," Shehu wrote.
He described the emerging alliances as a dangerous mix - different histories, similar records, diverse views, and an unending appetite for power - all converging to dominate the 2027 political platform.

According to Mahdi Shehu, the coming elections will be one of the most ruthless contests in Nigeria's history.

He accused the political class of being willing to deploy "all kinds of means - fair or foul" to gain control, including:

Treachery and political assassinations
Arbitrary arrests and targeted prosecutions

"Many leaders keep recycling themselves in power at train, light, hurricane, plane or ship speeds, showing a strong desire to stay in control no matter what," he added.

Mahdi Shehu likened the 2027 political terrain to a ticking time bomb, where recycled leaders with questionable pasts are determined to remain relevant. He believes this combination of desperation, greed, and political vengeance will make the race highly combustible.

Yet, despite the looming chaos, Shehu reminded Nigerians that ultimate power rests with God.

"The Almighty God had long ago decided who will be what at all times and under all circumstances, no matter the chaotic situation, however the desperation, irrespective of the darkness, uncertainty and dicey circumstances," he concluded.
