Ogbo Community Has Been Grappled With Erosion Problems - Hon. Emeka Nnamani Makes Case
The member representing Aba South/North Federal Constituency, Hon Emeka Nnamani has said that Ogbo Community has been grappled with erosion problems and urges Federal Government to intervene.

He made this plea on Wednesday during plenary while leading a debate which he titled: Need for Intervention on the Gully Erosion in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State

He stated that due to torrential rainfall that has damaged economic crops and washed away farmlands, Ogbo Community in Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State has suffered devastating gully erosion which has brought with it untold hardship and poses an imminent threat to lives and property of the residents;

The lawmaker said "Ogbo Community has, over the years grappled with the problem of erosion without receiving any succour from either the State or the Federal Government;

"The people of Ogbo Community have resorted to self-help to mitigate the ravaging effects of erosion in the community but their efforts have failed to control the erosion in the community;

"The houses of some residents of the community have been swallowed by the erosion, forcing them to take refuge on higher and safer grounds;

Speaking further, Hon Emeka pointed out that if the erosion portions in Ogbo Community are not urgently addressed, it could degenerate into a national disaster as surrounding communities are also under threat of being swept away.

"The interventions by the Abia State Government to address the erosion have not yielded the desired result due to a lack of the needed expertise and funds to confront such a threatÔÇØ he said.

In adopting the motion, the House resolved to:

(i) urge the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA) to provide relief materials to the victims of the erosion disaster in Ogbo Community in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State;

(ii) also urge the Ecological Fund office to release adequate funds to solve the erosion challenge in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State;

(iii) mandate the Committees on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness and Ecological Fund to ensure compliance.
