Abia State is set to witness another wave of rural transformation as the government of Dr. Alex Otti OFR prepares to flag off 11 rural roads and 3 agro-markets across all 17 local government areas of the state, under its multi-billion-naira Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) initiative.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, during a media briefing held at the Government House, Umuahia. The briefing, which had in attendance other top government functionaries, including the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Felix, was convened to update the public on recent resolutions of the State Executive Council.

"This flag-off will span across the three senatorial zones and 17 LGAs. Multiple beneficiary communities are included in this vital development phase," Prince Kanu announced.

Agro-Markets to Revive Local Economies

The three agro-markets to be flagged off are strategically located to serve farmers and traders in key agricultural belts:

Obinto Agro-Market in Arochukwu LGA
Uzuakoli Agro-Market in Bende LGA
Ndoru Agro-Market in Ikwuano LGA

These markets are expected to boost agricultural productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve farm-to-market logistics by integrating them with upgraded rural road networks.

"With these agro-markets, the state is solving real economic challenges for rural farmers. This isn't just infrastructure-it's economic empowerment," Kanu emphasized.

4.1 Billion Counterpart Fund Already Paid

Prince Kanu revealed that the Abia State Government has already committed 4.1 billion as counterpart funding for the RAAMP projects, underlining the serious financial commitment Governor Otti has made towards improving the rural economy and road infrastructure.

"This underscores the Governor's unwavering commitment to statewide infrastructural development, especially in our rural communities," he said.

48 Road Projects in Progress Across the State

Beyond the RAAMP initiative, direct labour rehabilitation and maintenance works are ongoing at 48 different road locations across Abia. According to the Information Commissioner, two of these roads have recently been completed, while three new roads were added to the state's growing maintenance portfolio.
