The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered a major political blow in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, as the entire structure of the party at ward and LGA levels formally abandoned the party, following a unanimous resolution reached at a general meeting of stakeholders.

The decision, contained in a communiqu├® issued after a well-attended meeting held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at the PDP office in Nkwoagu Isuochi, confirms that PDP has effectively collapsed in Umunneochi, with members choosing to move en masse alongside Hon. Chief Barrister Okey Igwe, who resigned from the party a few weeks earlier.

According to the communiqu├®, party members deliberated extensively on the state of the PDP at both national and local levels, particularly its chances ahead of the 2027 general elections. Following the discussions, the meeting resolved to set up a seven-man committee to review political developments and advise on the party's future in Umunneochi.

The committee, chaired by Dr. A.I.O. Uwaezuoke, with Chief Amaobi Ocho as Secretary and other members drawn from across the LGA, returned with a damning report that sealed the fate of the party.

The report concluded that PDP has lost relevance in Nigeria's political space, citing internal divisions, factional leadership, and the mass exit of key stakeholders, including governors, senators, legislators, and financiers.

In a rare and dramatic move, the PDP Umunneochi chapter resolved that all wards and the LGA structure must collapse at once, rather than allowing members to resign individually, which they said would weaken their collective bargaining power.

The communiqu├® clearly stated that despite PDP's historical dominance in Umunneochi, remaining in the party would render members politically irrelevant ahead of the 2027 elections.

As a result, the entire party structure at ward and LGA levels was formally dissolved, effectively ending PDP's operational existence in Umunneochi.

In a significant political endorsement, the party mandated Hon. Chief Barrister Okey Igwe to lead all former PDP members in Umunneochi to a new political party, where core values, internal democracy, and relevance would guide decisions.

The communiqu├® described Okey Igwe as a leader whose actions are driven by strong principles and consistency, stressing that the future of the political family in Umunneochi should follow his direction.

This development formally aligns the entire PDP structure with Igwe's political movement, weeks after his personal resignation from the party.

The resolution was unanimously adopted by members of the party, following a motion moved by Mr. Uwashine, Ward Chairman of Obinolu/Obiagu/Lomara Ward, and seconded by Mr. Eugene Odionyenma, Chairman of all Ward Chairmen in Umunneochi and Eziama-Agbor Ward Chairman.

The communiqu├® was signed by Hon. Chief Chigozie Igbo, PDP LGA Chairman, and Chief Amaobi Ocho (Mkpekere), LGA Secretary, confirming that the decision represents the collective will of the entire party structure.

With this development, Umunneochi becomes the latest flashpoint in the ongoing collapse of PDP structures across parts of Abia State, as internal crises and defections continue to weaken the party ahead of 2027.

Political observers say the en-masse defection could significantly reshape the Abia North political equation, especially with a sitting structure, ward leaders, and grassroots networks moving together as a bloc.
