"He would have died on the way. Doing a scan might have confirmed the diagnosis, but it wouldn't have changed anything. It was one of those strokes that, within an hour, carries you away.ÔÇØ

Pope Francis, who had previously battled double pneumonia earlier this year, appeared to have been recovering well. In fact, just a day before his death, he was seen waving to crowds from his open-air Popemobile in St. Peter's Square during Easter Sunday celebrations.

The sudden death has left millions of Catholics stunned, as it came without warning or prior indication of relapse. Alfieri revealed that Francis' health seemed stable in recent weeks, making his passing even more mysterious and painful for the faithful worldwide.
