Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been hit with a staggering N100 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, following what she described as malicious and degrading remarks made against her.
The lawsuit, lodged at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Tuesday, alleges that Akpabio and his legislative aide, Mfon Patrick, made defamatory statements that severely damaged her reputation.

According to the court filings, Akpoti-Uduaghan stated that Akpabio's aide, Mfon Patrick, made derogatory comments on Facebook, purportedly at the instruction of the Senate President. The controversial post titled "IS LOCAL CONTENT COMMITTEE OF THE SENATE NATASHA'S BIRTHRIGHT" further contained the statement:
"It is a bottled anger by the Kogi lawmaker, who knows nothing about legislative rules. She thinks being a lawmaker is all about pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the Chambers.ÔÇØ

This lawsuit follows a heated confrontation between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio on February 20 over seat allocation in the Senate chambers. The Kogi senator had refused to move to a newly assigned seat, sparking a tense exchange with the Senate President. The matter escalated on Tuesday when the upper legislative chamber referred her to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for disciplinary review.

Many observers believe this legal action is a direct pushback against what Akpoti-Uduaghan perceives as political intimidation. The lawsuit raises serious questions about gender bias in Nigerian politics, as many have pointed out the sexist undertones in the remarks allegedly made against her.
Political analysts see this lawsuit as a significant test for Akpabio's leadership of the Senate. If the court rules in favor of Akpoti-Uduaghan, it could set a precedent that holds powerful political figures accountable for their public statements.

Meanwhile, PDP and opposition lawmakers have voiced their support for Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling for a fair and impartial hearing of the case. Some have even suggested that the Ethics Committee's review of her actions is a retaliatory move orchestrated by Akpabio's camp.
