ABUJA - In a major security development aimed at strengthening Nigeria's defence structure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), as the new Minister of Defence.

The nomination was formally transmitted to the Senate on Monday through a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, marking a significant reshuffle following the resignation of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.
General Musa, aged 58, served as Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 to October 2025, where he oversaw several critical counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations across the country. His leadership drew both national and international commendations, including winning the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012.

Born in Sokoto in 1967, Musa spent his formative years in the state before proceeding to the College of Advanced Studies, Zaria. He completed his studies in 1986 and immediately enrolled in the Nigerian Defence Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1991. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army as a Second Lieutenant the same year, beginning a career that would span more than three decades.

He also served as Commander of Sector 3, Operation Lafiya Dole, and later Commander Sector 3, Multinational Joint Task Force, operating across the Lake Chad Basin in one of the region's most complex security theatres.
In 2021, Musa was appointed Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, before later rising to become Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps. His appointment as Chief of Defence Staff in 2023 positioned him at the forefront of Nigeria's fight against insurgency, terrorism, oil theft, banditry, and other evolving security threats.

In his letter to the Senate, President Tinubu said he has full confidence that General Musa's wealth of experience will "further consolidate ongoing reforms and reposition Nigeria's security architecture for optimal results.ÔÇØ
