Waste to Wealth: Abia Set To Partner with Netherlands to Boost Energy and Economy

The Abia State Government, under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, is set to collaborate with the Kingdom of the Netherlands to generate alternative and stable electricity as part of a broader vision to industrialize the state.

Governor Otti made this known while receiving a delegation led by the Deputy Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Peter Keulers, and the management team of Kaltani Company, who were in the state on an investment visit.

Speaking during the meeting, Governor Otti emphasized that his administration is focused on transforming waste into valuable products, including electricity generation. He highlighted the state's commitment to solving its energy challenges, noting that steady power supply is a key factor in driving industrial growth.

"We need to solve the energy problem in Abia. I'll say that we are almost there. Aba already has power from an independent integrated power company that runs 24 hours a day. Our goal is to expand this and ensure that entrepreneurs have the energy they need to thrive," the governor said.
Governor Otti reassured investors that the recently signed Abia State Electricity Law would soon be implemented, with the establishment of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency before the end of the week.

In his remarks, Mr. Peter Keulers of the Kingdom of the Netherlands stated that his team was in Abia to explore opportunities for deploying Dutch technology in waste management, circular economy, and agriculture.
"Circular economy is a priority for the Netherlands because it creates a more sustainable and resilient economy, reduces pollution, and ensures efficient resource utilization. We see great potential in Abia State, and we are keen on supporting its development," Keulers noted.

The Managing Director of Kaltani Company, Mr. Charles Nnanna, also expressed his company's readiness to partner with Abia State in implementing the waste-to-wealth project.

"Governor Otti is a visionary leader, and we are excited to be part of this transformation. Our goal is to galvanize waste, create jobs, and address multiple layers of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," Nnanna stated.
Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, highlighted that Abia is one of the five Nigerian states selected for a circular economy program financed by the European Union (EU).
He noted that after successfully improving sanitation in the state, Governor Otti is now prioritizing waste-to-energy solutions, which will not only boost environmental sustainability but also create employment opportunities.

Governor Otti also reassured that his administration is committed to restoring Aba and Umuahia's masterplans in collaboration with UN-Habitat. He lamented past distortions in the urban planning of these cities and vowed to correct them.

With this new collaboration, Abia State is set to witness significant industrial transformation, as stable electricity and innovative waste management solutions will boost business growth and create thousands of jobs.
