2027: Four opposition governors in advance talks to join APC - Party chieftain reveals

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has revealed that at least four incumbent governors from opposition parties are currently in advanced discussions to defect to the ruling party before the end of 2025.

According to APC, this move forms part of its wider strategy to strengthen its influence and broaden its presence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dr Ijeoma Arodiogbu, the party's National Vice Chairman (South-East), revealed this in an interview, identifying the governors of Plateau, Taraba, Rivers, and Abia states as the ones being targeted.

"It is a possibility that the Plateau governor will join us likewise his Taraba counterpart. We are also looking forward to receiving Rivers governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State in our midst," Arodiogbu said.

He added that talks with the governors have reached an advanced stage and that their defection could happen "in the coming weeks."

"These are all high possibilities. We expect that to happen in the coming weeks before our congresses. Most of these defections are expected to happen before the end of this year. Once they happen, it will further confirm that the APC remains the dominant and most organised political platform in Nigeria," he stated.

Arodiogbu attributed the party's expanding influence to its reform-oriented agenda and inclusive approach, which he said continue to draw prominent political figures from across the nation.

He added, "The reality is that the APC has grown into a home for all progressives. Our growth isn't just in numbers but also in the quality of leadership. Governors and other political figures are increasingly recognising that this party provides stability and direction for Nigeria's democracy."

According to him, the national chairman has always upheld an open-door policy for politicians wanting to join the party.

"The national chairman has emphasised that the APC remains open to all. We are welcoming individuals of goodwill who support President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda," he said.

Arodiogbu expressed his belief that the expected defections would reinforce the APC ahead of the 2025 congresses and boost the party's prospects for the 2027 elections.
