Arrest of Labour Party Leaders in Abia May Be Linked to Court Order: Inside the Factional Struggle

Two prominent Labour Party (LP) leaders in Abia State were arrested by security operatives during a party meeting in Aba. The arrested individuals are Ceekay Igara, the Deputy National Chairman, and Prince G. O. Ndubueze, the factional Acting State Chairman. This arrest comes amid the ongoing power tussle within the Labour Party in Abia State, which has been deeply divided by conflicting factions vying for control.

The arrests, which took place at a hotel in Aba, may be linked to the recent court order obtained by Emmanuel Nweze Otti. Otti, who was inaugurated as Acting Chairman of the LP in Abia on July 23, 2024, secured a court order prohibiting anyone else from parading themselves as the party's acting state chairman. This legal move was reportedly a response to the recognition of Prince Ndubueze as the acting chairman by the Barrister Julius Abure-led national leadership of the Labour Party.

The division within the Labour Party, both at the national and state levels, has intensified in recent months. Some party members have expressed outrage over the arrests, viewing them as politically motivated and calling for the immediate release of their leaders. Notable figures in Abia State have also called for the release of Comrade Ceekay Igara, urging authorities to resolve the internal conflict without resorting to arrests.

With the Labour Party's leadership battle unresolved and tensions rising, the arrest of these key figures has heightened the political stakes in Abia State, further deepening the divide within the party.
