The political tempo in Imo State is already rising as the debate over who succeeds Governor Hope Uzodinma in 2028 begins to gather steam.

Governor Uzodinma, speaking at Government House, Owerri, when stakeholders from Owerri Zone paid him a solidarity visit, declared emphatically that it is not within his power to anoint his successor.

According to him, "the person that will emerge as my successor must be a product of a democratic process and not chosen by me or by a few individuals.ÔÇØ

The governor used the opportunity to caution political actors not to twist the Imo Charter of Equity into a weapon of confusion. He stressed that while the Charter was designed to restore balance and fairness in governance, it should not become an instrument for spreading misinformation or fanning division across the state.

"It is a document to remind us of imbalance in the system and help us find solutions. I call on leaders, especially from Owerri Zone, to work with me in ending the confusion. If this issue is not resolved under my administration, it will be more difficult for those coming after me,ÔÇØ Uzodinma warned.

The governor also called for patience, urging leaders and aspirants to focus on strengthening unity, improving security, boosting healthcare, and advancing economic development, instead of rushing into early campaigns ahead of 2027.

Earlier, the spokesperson for the Owerri Zone delegation, Chief Charles Amadi, expressed support for Uzodinma and lauded his effort in institutionalizing the Charter of Equity. He assured that Owerri Zone remains united, working harmoniously with one voice to support power shift when the time comes.

Political observers say Uzodinma's remarks have officially kicked off the battle for who takes over Douglas House in 2028. While the governor insists the choice must rest with the electorate, stakeholders across zones are already mobilizing for what promises to be a heated succession contest.
