Stop Being Emotional, Court Did Not Order Senate To Recall Natasha - Lawyer

A Nigerian lawyer, Ekemini Udim, has argued that it would be incorrect to interpret a recent ruling by Justice Binta Nyako as an order for the Nigerian Senate to recall the suspended Kogi Central lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

According to Udim, the court only recommended that the Senate amend its rules regarding the punishment of erring members.

All Facts News reports that the legal practitioner made the submission on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television's The Morning Brief.

He held that anybody interpreting the court judgement as an order for Senator Natasha's recall is incorrect.

"It is very clear: my Lord has not said, 'Recall Senator Natasha'. What the judge said was that, 'You cannot do like this, you cannot do like that,' and then makes a recommendation to the Senate, and says, 'Senate, think of how you can amend your rules. '

"You cannot equate that to say, 'Recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.'

"And therefore, anybody who is interpreting the judgment to the extent that the judge ordered the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is not doing justice to that judgment,ÔÇØ he said.

Udim also stated that the matter between Natasha and the Senate should be examined from a legal perspective, rather than an emotional one.

"A lot of people are taking this matter from the emotional angle, and it becomes a problem when you do that.

"And this is not good for Senator Natasha. This must be taken from the angle of law,ÔÇØ he said.

All Facts News recalls Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was handed a six-month suspension in March following her sexual harassment claims against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

However, she attempted to resume sitting at the National Assembly on Tuesday, claiming a court judgment mandated the Senate to recall her.

However, the Kogi Central lawmaker was denied entry by security operatives at the National Assembly gate.
