Edo State Tension: Deputy Governor Shaibu Condemns 'Impostor' Claims

Philip Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, has strongly responded to recent accusations from the state government, labeling the claims as an affront to the judiciary. His remarks came after the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, described him as an "impostor" following his return to office.

Shaibu, who was reinstated by a Federal High Court order on July 17, 2024, expressed deep concern over the state government's characterization of him as an impostor. Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Musa Ebomhiana, he asserted that such statements undermine the judiciary's authority and insult the electorate who voted for the Obaseki-Shaibu ticket in the 2020 Edo State gubernatorial election.

In his statement, Shaibu pointed out that the court's decision unequivocally affirmed his position as Deputy Governor, and any attempt to suggest otherwise is not only misleading but also disrespectful to the legal process. He further emphasized that the people of Edo State did not elect Marvellous Omobayo, a political appointee of Governor Godwin Obaseki, to the office of Deputy Governor.

Shaibu's return to office comes after a contentious period marked by his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly. However, the court's ruling reinstated him, signifying that his position was never legally vacant.

The Deputy Governor's response underscores the growing tension within the Edo State government, as he continues to assert his legal and political legitimacy in the face of opposition from elements within the state administration.
