JUST IN: Former Rivers Governor Breaks Silence Following Supreme Court Verdict on Rivers Crisis

Former Rivers State Governor Rufus Ada George has urged political leaders and residents to remain calm and embrace dialogue following the Supreme Court's ruling on the ongoing political crisis in the state. The Supreme Court recently upheld the legitimacy of the Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly and directed that state allocations be withheld until the government presents a budget to the legislature.

Speaking to journalists on Monday in Port Harcourt, George cautioned against inflammatory remarks, threats, and ultimatums that could escalate tensions. He appealed to all political actors to put the state's welfare above personal or political interests. "Although the Supreme Court has rendered its verdict, there is still room for humane and pragmatic decisions that can help mitigate the adverse effects of the ruling on the people,ÔÇØ he said. He warned that political disputes, if not properly handled, could have far-reaching consequences, citing historical examples like the 1962 Western Regional Crisis. George also expressed concerns about the economic impact of the crisis, particularly the delay in releasing federal allocations to the state. He noted that ordinary citizens were already feeling the strain and called for urgent steps to resolve the standoff.

"Even in war-torn regions, negotiation remains a vital tool for peacebuilding,ÔÇØ he said.He specifically appealed to former governors and their deputies to come together and work for the stability of the state. He also called on the 32 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to set aside personal interests and prioritize the progress of Rivers State.

"As the oldest civilian governor of Rivers State, I remain optimistic about our future. Let us embrace compromise, unity, and peace as we chart a new course for our dear state,ÔÇØ he added. His statement came amid rising political tensions, with the Rivers State House of Assembly recently issuing a 72-hour ultimatum to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman and Commissioners to appear before it. The Assembly had earlier demanded that Governor Siminalayi Fubara present the 2025 budget and submit names for commissioner appointments.

Rufus Ada George served as the second civilian Governor of Rivers State from January 1992 to November 1993 during the Nigerian Third Republic.
