A major political crisis has erupted in Akwa Ibom State as chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) accuse Senate President Godswill Akpabio of deliberately weakening the party structure to benefit the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a strongly worded petition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, APC elders in the state claimed that Akpabio, in collaboration with the Minister of Petroleum (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, and the APC State Chairman, Stephen Ntukekpo, is working to hand over the party's control to PDP and Governor Umo Eno.

In an open letter titled "The Worrisome State of APC in Akwa Ibom: A Call for Your Urgent Intervention", signed by Elder Okokon James, Hon. Peter Ibanga, and Chief Victor Affiah (representing Uyo, Eket, and Ikot Ekpene Senatorial Districts), the chieftains painted a grim picture of the party's future if immediate action is not taken.

"What the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, is doing to the die-hard members of the APC in Akwa Ibom State is the height of betrayal and treachery. History and posterity will not be kind to him and all those he is using to kill the party.ÔÇØ

They allege that Akpabio has directed party officials to sabotage APC in the state, making it impossible for the party to function effectively.

The APC leaders accused both Akpabio and Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo of actively sabotaging the party, warning that if APC members defect to opposition parties, President Tinubu should hold Akpabio and Ekpo responsible.
