Kano SDP secretary resigns, cites leadership crisis

The State Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kano, Hussaini Isa Mairiga, has resigned from his position and withdrawn his membership from the party, citing what he called the collapse of internal democracy and growing frustration with Nigeria's political direction.

In his resignation letter dated October 19 and addressed to the party's national chairman, Mairiga said he could no longer remain in a system where "democracy has degenerated into a structure driven by personal enrichment and political patronage rather than service to the people.ÔÇØ

He expressed disappointment over what he described as a deepening crisis within opposition parties, blaming external interference for fuelling internal divisions that have weakened their effectiveness.

Mairiga lamented that the SDP had been engulfed in what he called a "severe leadership crisis,ÔÇØ with conflicting claims over who truly leads the party.

According to him, these lingering disputes have "eroded public confidence in the party and hindered its ability to serve as a credible alternative to the ruling party.ÔÇØ

He added that the situation reflects a broader problem in Nigeria's political environment, where opposition movements are often destabilized by vested interests rather than supported to offer meaningful governance alternatives.
