LP Crisis: Abia Court Halts Abure's Congresses - Why The Party Is In Turmoil

The internal crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) has taken a dramatic turn as an Abia State High Court sitting in Isiala Ngwa issued a fresh interim order stopping Barr. Julius Abure and his loyalists from going ahead with their proposed nationwide congresses.

This was confirmed late Monday in a statement released by the Interim National Publicity Secretary, Ife Salako, on behalf of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led Interim National Working Committee (NWC), which continues to assert its authority amid deepening factional battles within the party.

According to the statement, the court order-delivered on 26th November 2025 in Suit No: HIN/47/2025-restrains Abure and what the committee described as his "illegal NWCÔÇØ from conducting ward, local government, or state congresses across Nigeria.

The applicant in the suit, Hon. (Sir) Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti, had sought an injunction to halt what he termed "unlawful and destabilizing political activitiesÔÇØ being orchestrated by Abure despite earlier warnings from party elders, BoT members, and state structures.

The Nenadi Usman-led committee declared the planned congresses null and void, insisting that all Labour Party supporters must disregard any schedule or invitation circulated by Abure's faction.

"As a law-abiding political organisation, we urge our millions of supporters nationwide to comply with the court order,ÔÇØ the statement said, adding that the party will soon announce fresh, legitimate congresses once internal processes are concluded.

The committee further called on the Inspector-General of Police to immediately arrest and prosecute anyone involved in the "illegitimate and contemptuousÔÇØ congresses earlier slated for December 2, 4, and 6.

It also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to dissociate itself from what it described as an attempt to mislead the public and undermine judicial authority. The party said a formal notice will be sent to INEC once authentic congress activities are approved and scheduled.

With this development, the Labour Party's already fragile unity faces renewed tension as both factions continue to battle for supremacy, legitimacy and control ahead of the 2027 elections.
