The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a dramatic turn as the Samuel Anyanwu-led faction announced the suspension of the party's Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, and five other top members of the National Working Committee (NWC) in what appears to be a direct retaliation against their earlier suspension by the Damagum-led group.

In a press briefing held in Abuja on Saturday, Anyanwu, who spoke on behalf of his faction, declared Mohammed Abdulrahman, the National Vice Chairman (North-Central), as the new Acting National Chairman.

According to Anyanwu, the decision followed what he described as "financial misconduct, incompetence, and flagrant disregard for court judgmentsÔÇØ by the suspended Damagum.

All six officials were suspended for one month and referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for further action.

Anyanwu accused the Damagum-led faction of undermining party unity and mismanaging internal processes, alleging that key decisions were taken without due consultation.

"We have watched with dismay how the integrity of our great party has been compromised. As leaders, we can no longer stand idle while the constitution of the PDP is being violated,ÔÇØ Anyanwu stated.

Political observers, however, view the move as a clear act of retaliation, coming barely 24 hours after the Damagum-led NWC suspended Anyanwu, National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), and two others for alleged misconduct and insubordination.

The development marks a dangerous escalation in the PDP's leadership crisis, threatening to further divide the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As both factions trade accusations, party loyalists across the country are calling for urgent intervention by elders of the PDP to prevent what many now describe as a full-blown implosion.
