In a bold political move that signals a new phase of internal restructuring, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, and Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, have jointly summoned a high-powered National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Labour Party.

This decisive gathering is scheduled to hold in Abuja on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, just days after the Supreme Court decisively dissolved the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC), leaving the party in leadership limbo.

According to a notice signed by Ibrahim Umar, spokesperson of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), the NEC meeting will run concurrently with a strategic town hall engagement involving major stakeholders and organs of the party. The venue for this dual event is the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

The meeting, which observers describe as a major power consolidation move, will bring together an influential crop of political heavyweights. Among those expected are Obi's 2023 running mate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, current and former Labour Party Senators and House of Representatives members, and candidates from the 2023 general election.

Also listed to attend are members of the now-defunct NWC, representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) Political Commissions, all National Transition Committee (NTC) members, and LP governorship candidates who have remained loyal to the party.

Political analysts believe this gathering may be used by Obi and Otti to chart a new direction for the Labour Party, strengthen internal democracy, and potentially groom a new leadership cadre loyal to their vision ahead of 2027.
