RIVERS CRISIS: Nobody Can Remove Me As Chairman Of Ikwere LGA - Nwanosike Dares Gov. Fubara | WATCH VIDEO

More political crisis seems to be brewing in Rivers State following a recent comment by the Ikwere Local Government Chairman, Dr Samuel Nwanosike, who vowed not to vacate his office on June 17, 2024.

Reports have it that the Chairmen in the 23 local government areas of the state are expected to leave office on June 17, as their tenure elapses. WATCH VIDEO BELOW ATTACHED FROM OUR FACEBOOK HANDLE:

However, on March 13, 2024, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martins Amaewhule passed the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill which elongated the tenure of the council chairmen.

But, a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Tuesday, nullified the tenure extension for the chairmen.

It ruled that the law was inconsistent with the 1999 constitution and Section 9 (1) of Rivers State Law No 5 of 2018.

Reacting, the Ikwere Chairman, in a viral video sighted on Thursday, vowed that despite the court's ruling, he would not vacate office.

While addressing his supporters, Nwanosike said the law made by the Amaewhule faction of the Assembly stands.

According to him, "If the Speaker of the assembly says that because the governor of the state failed in his duty to conduct local government elections, I Samuel Nwanosike should remain in office, so shall we stay in the office.
