Top politicians mobilize against APC ahead of 2027 election | See Names

There are indications that a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and an ex-minister are among the main figures driving a new coalition aimed at challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.

Sources reveal that these two political heavyweights are working behind the scenes to rally key stakeholders across the country in support of the emerging alliance.

They are joined by other prominent figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who are engaging in intense consultations with like-minded politicians to form a formidable opposition platform.

While the ex-minister has kept a low profile in the mobilization efforts, the South-East-born politician-who previously served as a chairman of a prominent government agency's Board of Trustees and as a member of the House of Representatives-is reportedly a key facilitator of the movement.

He is aligned with former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who recently defected from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Other key figures reportedly involved in the coalition talks include a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Rauf Aregbesola, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), a former Minister of State for Education, and a former Minister of Transportation.

According to insider sources, while El-Rufai has been vocal about his opposition to the APC, he is not the sole leader of the movement.

"He is just the megaphone,ÔÇØ a close ally told Nigerian Tribune, adding that the nearest thing to a coordinator is the former Minister of Education, who is described as an "absolutely brilliant young manÔÇØ with experience both as a minister and a lawmaker.

However, there are suggestions that the SDP may only serve as a temporary platform, as the coalition leaders are considering a more influential political structure to challenge the APC in 2027.
