This meeting is particularly noteworthy given the history between the two leaders. Ambode, who served as governor from 2015, lost his bid for re-election in 2019 during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election, a loss marked by a bitter fallout with Sanwo-Olu. The tension between the two was palpable and had persisted for years, reflecting deeper internal conflicts within the ruling political class in Lagos.

However, the ice began to thaw in 2023 when Sanwo-Olu and Ambode publicly reconciled during a reception held in honor of President Bola Tinubu at Lagos House, Marina. This was the first time in over four years that Sanwo-Olu, Ambode, and another former governor, Babatunde Fashola, were seen together, signaling a potential end to the internal wrangling that had previously plagued the state's leadership.
