Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has sparked political shockwaves with a blunt warning that Nigeria may "cease to existÔÇØ if the All Progressives Congress (APC) retains power beyond 2027.

Speaking on Saturday, August 2, in Sokoto during a grassroots mobilisation rally for the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition coalition, El-Rufai said the APC government has proven "incompetentÔÇØ and unfit to lead the nation into the future.

El-Rufai declared his mission is no longer about personal gain but about defending the survival of Nigeria.

"I'm not in politics to get anything for myself. I'm in politics to serve,ÔÇØ he said. "When the government does not serve the people, it is my duty as a senior citizen to come out, condemn it, and take steps to reverse the situation.ÔÇØ

The former APC heavyweight said the 2027 general elections will be a turning point, warning that a second APC term would destroy what remains of Nigeria's social capital.

"If we allow this party and the government to continue for a second term in office, we may not have a country at all,ÔÇØ he cautioned. "This is a fight for our lives.ÔÇØ

El-Rufai was one of the founding architects of the APC, serving in key political roles during the party's rise to power. However, his relationship with the ruling party collapsed earlier this year after the Senate refused to confirm his ministerial nomination - reportedly over security concerns.

In March 2025, he defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), but his stay was short-lived. The SDP expelled him and imposed a 30-year ban, accusing him of forging membership documents and other infractions.

Now, El-Rufai has re-emerged as a major figure in the ADC opposition coalition, aligning with other prominent politicians to rally voters against the APC.

In Sokoto, El-Rufai vowed to mobilise Nigerians nationwide against the APC's policies, accusing the federal government of gross underperformance.

"We are in Sokoto to begin the process of mobilising Nigerians against the APC government anywhere - and against the federal government in Abuja,ÔÇØ he said.
