At its 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on August 25, 2025, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman-a role he will hold until the elective national convention scheduled from November 15-16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Why Did NEC Confirm Damagum?
To Ensure Continuity and Stability: Damagum had been serving as acting chairman since March 2023, after a court-approved removal of the former chairman, Iyorchia Ayu. Confirming him now avoids another leadership vacuum just weeks before the convention.

Reward for Crisis Management: NEC cited Damagum's success in stabilizing the party through turbulent times, praising the National Working Committee (NWC) under his leadership for keeping the party intact
