ABUJA, Nigeria - April 9, 2025 - Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has broken his silence following the recent Supreme Court verdict which nullified the leadership of Julius Abure and his National Working Committee. Speaking during an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, April 9, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, Obi delivered a powerful and emotional call for total party reform.

The emergency meeting, convened in the wake of the court judgment, served as a rallying point for Labour Party stakeholders to reset, reorganize, and reorient the party's direction ahead of future elections. Obi made it clear: the era of impunity, internal sabotage, and imposition of unqualified candidates must end.

"This is the time for us to do everything as a family. We've chosen to be a family, and this family must include fairness and justice for all,ÔÇØ Obi said. "Everybody is free to contest, but no more shortcuts. We must run from ward to local government, state to zone-and do it right nationally.ÔÇØ

In a fiery moment that drew applause, Obi slammed the selection of unqualified individuals as party flagbearers in the past.

"We're not going to have drivers and constables representing Labour Party in the National Assembly. We want people who are members of this party. Competent people. Loyal people. People with character and capacity,ÔÇØ Obi declared.

He openly acknowledged that the Labour Party made mistakes in the past, many of which, he implied, were enabled under the now-nullified Abure leadership. But with the Supreme Court decision offering what he described as a divine reset, Obi believes this is the time to get things right.

"The judgment was a signal. It's time to clean house. We must build a party that Nigerians can trust-a party of ideology, structure, and internal discipline. If we don't correct these wrongs, we will become like the same old parties we criticize.ÔÇØ

Obi's speech also focused on the alarming socio-economic decline in Nigeria, with an urgent warning that the country is collapsing under the weight of bad governance, economic hardship, and leadership failure.

"The numbers are clear. The indices are clear. People who used to beg on the streets have disappeared-because they themselves now need help. I meet people every day in Abuja who tell me, 'Oga, I can't go back home.' That's how bad it is.ÔÇØ

Amid these challenges, Obi maintained that the Labour Party must be seen as a credible alternative, offering Nigerians the best hands at all levels-from state assemblies to the Senate, governorships, and the presidency.

"Even if we go and fail, let's fail doing the right thing. It is better to fail while being right than to succeed by doing the wrong thing.ÔÇØ

He called for internal reconciliation, urging members to set aside grudges and work together with love and unity.
