PDP BoT Backs Udeh-Okoye's Position as National Secretary, Sets NEC Meeting Date | READ DETAILS

The Board of Trustees of the PDP, at an emergency meeting today, issued a landmark decision recognizing Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the National Secretary, fully supporting the Court of Appeal's judgment. The meeting also set the date for the highly anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, marking a pivotal moment in the party's future.

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held an emergency meeting today, Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. Chaired by Senator Adolphus Wabara, the meeting focused on several critical issues affecting the party's leadership and organizational structure.

At the meeting, the BoT reaffirmed its vital role as a governing organ of the PDP, as outlined in Section 13(1)(r) of the party's constitution. It emphasized its authority to maintain the highest standards of morality in all party activities, as enshrined in Section 32(5)(a) of the PDP Constitution. The BoT holds the power to act as the conscience of the party, ensuring all officers adhere to the norms and ethical conduct expected.

One of the most pressing matters addressed at the meeting was the controversial issue surrounding the position of the PDP National Secretary. After careful consideration, the BoT adopted the report from its committee, led by Barrister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki SAN, regarding the High Court of Enugu's ruling on the matter. The court had issued a declaratory judgment which was subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal. In accordance with the judgment, the BoT formally recognized Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the substantive National Secretary of the PDP.

This decision comes after a period of legal uncertainty surrounding the position, and the BoT's resolution ensures full compliance with the Court of Appeal's ruling. The Board further directed the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP to recognize Udeh-Okoye as the National Secretary and to immediately swear him into office in line with the legal judgment.

In an effort to maintain party unity, the BoT urged all PDP organs, stakeholders, and members across Nigeria to respect the Court's decision. It also called on democracy development partners and institutions to take note of this pivotal ruling.

The BoT also commended the efforts of the PDP Governors' Forum, the NWC, and the South East Executive Committee for their consistent adherence to the party's constitution and operational guidelines. In recognition of the party's strengthening leadership, the BoT passed a unanimous vote of confidence on Senator Wabara, Chairman of the BoT, and Senator Ahmed Makarfi, Secretary of the BoT, for their outstanding leadership and stabilizing influence on the PDP.

Additionally, the Board expressed satisfaction with the recent announcement by the PDP NWC that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, March 13, 2025. The NEC meeting is expected to address critical party matters and will serve as a platform for important deliberations that could shape the future direction of the PDP and Nigeria as a whole.

In closing, the Board of Trustees called for unity within the party and emphasized the need for all members to work together to strengthen the PDP as it seeks to reclaim its rightful place in the leadership of the country.
